McLemore Scholarship deadline Feb 5, 2010

The GSU Foundation and Alumni Association are now taking applications for the Dr. W. Prince and Elsie McLemore Scholarship for Elementary Education. The deadline for all applications is Feb 5, 2010. These funds are still available for the Winter 2010 term.

The McLemore Scholarship is available to students majoring in Elementary Education. The amount of the award is $500.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Student must be a graduate or undergraduate degree seeking student in good academic standing.
  • Must at Governors State University majoring in elementary education.
  • Must be enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours.
  • Must have completed at least nine hours at GSU.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Student must be a minority.

Pickering Fellowship Program

The Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship seeks to recruit talented students in academic programs relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. The goal is to attract outstanding students from all ethnic, racial, and social backgrounds who have an interest in pursuing a Foreign Service career in the U.S. Department of State. The Program develops a source of trained men and women from academic disciplines representing the skill needs of the Department, who are dedicated to representing America’s interests abroad.

Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards

Soroptimist International of the Americas, Midwestern Region is accepting applications for its Opportunity Awards Program through January 15, 2010.

Eligible applicants for the Opportunity Awards must be women who:

  • Provide the primary financial support for their families
  • Have financial need
  • Are enrolled in or have been accepted in a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program
  • Reside in one of Soroptimist International of the Americas’ member nations (USA is one of these)
  • Have not previously been a recipient of an Opportunity Award.

TQE Offering Scholarships

The Teacher Quality Enhancement Recruitment (TQE-R) grant at Governors State University is offering scholarships, from $500 to $3,000, to students entering the university’s secondary education programs in biology, chemistry, English, or math.

This is a renewable scholarship until Fall 2010 so students may reapply for the scholarship in subsequent terms. Applications for Winter 2010 must be submitted by December 1, 2009. Scholarship requirements and applications are available online at the TQE webpage.

This program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

MILE Substitute Teacher Academy 2-20-10

This great program is open to those with a baccalaureate degree who are looking for a way to make a difference in our schools as a substitute teacher. Jewish Federation of Metro Chicago Scholarship

The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago has announced its Academic Scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year. Approximately $500,000 are available for Jewish undergraduate and graduate students who are identified as showing promise in their chosen career fields.

Apply for Tuition Waivers by Nov 16, 2009

Applications are now available for College of Education Tuition Waivers for the Winter 2010 trimester.

The deadline for filing applications is 5:00 pm on Monday, November 16, 2009.

Pick up an application form Monday through Friday from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm in the College of Education Dean’s Office (Room G256). Or click here to download a form.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Must be admitted to a CE program and be registered for at least 6 credit hours by Nov 16, 2009
  • Must have cumulative GPA >= 3.00
  • Must complete a Tuition Waiver application form
  • Must submit two letters of recommendation from faculty or staff from GSU or your previous institution
  • Must submit all application materials by 5pm on Nov 16, 2009
Tuition Waiver award recipients are selected by a panel made up of administrators and/or faculty members within the College of Education.
Tuition Waiver recipients are asked to provide five hours each week for collaboration on a project with a COE faculty mentor.
Undergraduate and graduate tuition waivers are available for a maximum of two trimesters. Graduate Minority Tuition Waivers are available for a maximum of four trimesters. As Tuition Waivers are not automatically renewed, an additional application will be required for each trimester.
Undergraduate Tuition Waiver conditions: 6 – 12 enrolled credit hours.
Graduate Tuition Waiver conditions: 6 – 9 enrolled credit hours.
Minority Graduate Tuition Waiver conditions: 6 – 9 enrolled credit hours.

Note: All Tuition Waivers cover in-state tuition rates only and do not cover activity fees.
